Being a Female in the Tech Industry

“you can code that’s so adorable“
“hey you should learn angular, you can get a real dev job - let me send you some tutorials”
“are you actually developer???”

these are just dm’s i got 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 😐

i’ve never been a stranger to this. i was one of the only two girls in my high school’s computer science program. my college cs classes were dominated by males. i’ve been in situations where i was not taken seriously, as men in the room would be assumed to be the ones in charge. as a woman in this field, you constantly have to worry if you’re being perceived as too arrogant, bitchy, ditzy, etc. unfortunately this is the framework we’re *supposed* to adapt to in order to succeed.

“women are severely underrepresented in the tech industry and it’s a real problem. we need to eliminate gender (and all other) biases from the workplace to encourage fair representation of all groups before it’s too late and the algorithms around us inherit our social biases.” -@codingblonde

ive been working full time in this industry for 5 years, coding for 16 years - im fortunate to be at a company (KTP) that fosters gender equality and has a lot of women in leadership but i’m still learning how to deal with this outside or work ⠀
